History of Mega Millions
Mega Millions launched in 1996 as 'The Big Game' with just six participating states. In 2002, its name was changed to Mega Millions and an increasing number of states have joined the game since that time. A cross-selling agreement in 2010 saw Mega Millions tickets go on sale in states that previously only sold Powerball tickets. At present 45 states and two jurisdictions, including Washington D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands, participate in Mega Millions.
In October 2013 Mega Millions underwent the most significant game changes in its history, including increasing the starting jackpot from $12 million to $15 million and the value of the second tier prize from $250,000 to $1 million. In addition, the Megaplier feature began to offer a 5x multiplier and the annuity payment period for jackpot winners increased from 26 years to 30 years.
