History of Mega Millions
Mega Millions launched in 1996 as ‘The Big Game’ with just six participating states. In 2002, the game changed to Mega Millions and, since then, an increasing number of states have joined. At present 43 states and two jurisdictions, including the District of Columbia and the US Virgin Islands, participate in the game.
In October 2013 Mega Millions underwent the most significant game changes in its history, including increasing the starting jackpot from $12 million to $15 million and the second tier prize from $250,000 to $1 million. Other changes included the Megaplier ball pool increasing from 2-4 to 2-5 and the annuity payment period extending from 26 years to 30 years.
