3rd November 2017 4:10 PM
Virginia Lottery officials have apologized to Mega Millions lottery fans, as up to 323 tickets were incorrectly sold, ahead of the first drawing under the new game rules on Tuesday, October 31st. A technical issue occurred, which meant that some players were sold tickets that featured the old number matrix and they were left with no chance of winning the top jackpot prize.
What Happened in Virginia?
The Mega Millions changes came into effect on October 28th and as part of these changes, the number of main balls were reduced from 75 to 70. The Mega Balls also changed and increased from 15 to 25. However, the Virginia Lottery experienced technical difficulties and accidentally sold 323 tickets under the old number format. The tickets were sold at $1 per line, rather than the new $2 price.
The technical error included 628 lines, with 182 bearing a number between 71 and 75, which made it impossible for players to win the jackpot. The winning numbers for the drawing on Tuesday were 6, 28, 31, 52 and 53, with Mega Ball 12. You can view a full prize breakdown with payouts and the total number of winners in each prize tier on the Mega Millions Numbers page.
What Will Happen Next?
Lottery officials have reassured players, saying “the price of the ticket and the price of a replacement ticket will be refunded to those players. Any prizes won by the original ticket will be honored by the Lottery.” If you have been affected, contact your nearest lottery office for more information.
