Harold Diamond, a retired school principal from Wurtsboro, New York, is the sole winner of the $326 million Mega Millions jackpot, having matched all numbers drawn correctly on November 4th. Harold is now New York’s biggest ever jackpot winner.
What were the winning numbers?
The winning numbers for the drawing on November 4th were 9, 15, 24, 39, 41 and the Mega Ball was 1. You can view a full prize breakdown including the total winners and payouts for the drawing on the Mega Millions Numbers page.
The 80-year-old bought the winning ticket at the Valero gas station, located on Route 302 in Middletown. Harold was on his way to Middletown with his wife after voting on Election Day when they experienced bad weather. Harold said, “My wife insisted we stop to eat and wait for the weather to clear, and I reluctantly agreed.” When stopping at the gas station, Harold decided to buy 10 sets of Quick Pick numbers.
Harold was playing golf the next day when he found out that he was now $326 million richer. He has chosen to receive the winnings as a cash lump-sum payment of $197 million before taxes. Talking about his new fortune, Harold said, “It’s very hard to fathom. We feel very blessed”. This lottery win wasn’t Harold’s first win playing Mega Millions, as he had previously won a prize of $33.
How will he spend the Mega Millions winnings?
The former principal and his wife are planning to take a trip to Hawaii for their 55th anniversary. They have not yet decided what to spend the remainder of the winnings on, but they have two children and two grandchildren. They are also big fans of the Jets. If you won the Mega Millions jackpot, what would you buy first?
